Sonira Sound vs PlayScore 2: follow your piano or scan for playback?

PlayScore 2 focuses on recognizing printed notation, playing it back and exporting it. Sonira Sound focuses on reading and practicing your scores while it listens to your piano. They can serve different steps in the same workflow.

Scanning and following are different tasks

PlayScore 2 recognizes photos and PDFs and turns them into music playback. Its Professional plan documents MusicXML and MIDI export. The reviewed pages describe scrolling with app playback; they do not establish live microphone-based performance following.

Sonira follows acoustic piano or MIDI and offers a Study mode that waits for expected notes. It imports MusicXML, MXL and MIDI directly, and can also convert PDFs and photos through beta recognition. A plain scanned image does not itself contain the symbolic note data needed for that following workflow.

Treat recognition results as something to check

Sonira’s PDF/image conversion can misread or omit notes, rhythms, fingerings, dynamics, text and layout. Compare the converted notation with the retained original before practicing from it. Conversion credits are separate from the Unlimited Imports unlock.

We have not run a controlled recognition-accuracy comparison against PlayScore 2. This page makes no claim that Sonira scans more accurately. If scanning is your main requirement, test the same difficult pages in both workflows and compare their output carefully.

Use the tool that fits the next step

Choose PlayScore 2 when your priority is hearing printed music or exporting recognized notation. Consider Sonira when your priority is playing your own piano scores with following and right-note practice.

If you already have a valid MusicXML export, Sonira can read that format without spending a PDF conversion credit. An export still deserves a check against its original. Source quality, notation complexity and recognition errors can affect the result.

Sonira’s import unlock is a one-time purchase; PlayScore’s advanced plans use subscriptions. Check each current local offer for its precise inclusions. Neither a price nor a feature table is a substitute for trying a representative score.
