Piano practice and sheet music
Sonira Sound vs forScore: piano practice or a PDF library?
Choose forScore when a mature PDF library, annotations and performance controls are your priority. Consider Sonira Sound when you want your own piano scores to follow your playing and to practice with a mode that waits for the right notes.
Last checked 2026-10-16. Features are based on publisher documentation, not a hands-on accuracy benchmark. “Not established” means the reviewed pages did not confirm a feature. Prices and plans can change.
Start with the type of music you read
forScore is built around PDF sheet music. Its documented library and annotation tools suit musicians who want to preserve the printed page and mark it up for rehearsal or performance.
Sonira opens MusicXML, MXL and MIDI as notation that can fit the display. It also retains imported PDFs and photos. Converting those sources into playable notation is a separate beta workflow, with conversion credits and a need to compare the result against the original.
Decide how you want the page to move
Sonira follows an acoustic piano through the microphone or a connected MIDI instrument. Play mode follows a performance; Study mode waits for expected notes. You can choose scrolling, page turns or manual navigation.
forScore documents pedal controls, timed turns, linked-audio features and face gestures with Pro. The pages reviewed do not establish microphone-based following of live piano playing. That is a limit of this comparison, not proof that an undocumented feature cannot exist.
A one-time purchase is not unique to Sonira
forScore is an upfront app purchase with optional Pro features. Sonira is free to start, with a one-time Unlimited Imports unlock. PDF/image recognition credits are separate from that unlock. Check the App Store for the current price and what each purchase includes.
If your main need is extensive PDF annotation and performance-library management, review forScore first. If your main need is practicing your own notation with listening and right-note waits, try Sonira with an included piece, then a score you know well. Neither app can replace judging whether a musical performance sounds right.
